Through practical classroom examples comparing New Zealand and Germany, participants will discover simple, low-preparation activities that encourage students to observe, interpret, and discuss cultural perspectives. The session will provide teachers with ideas for integrating intercultural thinking into their German programmes, helping students develop the curiosity and critical thinking needed to engage with other cultures.

Teachers will walk away with a clear understanding of how to develop intercultural thinking in beginner to advanced German classes without needing extensive materials. The workshop showcases several task formats that are visually engaging, and designed to stimulate cultural comparison, hypothesis-building, and reflection in students. The tasks are built around image pairs from New Zealand and Germany and can be easily adapted for different age levels. Teachers will also receive scaffolding techniques to support learner output (e.g. sentence starters for comparisons, reflective writing frames, debating language), and strategies to guide class discussions beyond surface-level observations. This session is particularly valuable for teachers looking to integrate intercultural communicative language teaching (ICLT) into their programmes in a practical and curriculum-relevant way.
German teachers at primary, intermediate or high schools.
The workshop will be conducted in German.
Language Circle is funded to provide professional learning for provisionally and fully registered Primary, Intermediate and Secondary teachers throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.
