Revive your passion for French and deepen your intercultural understanding of New Caledonia through this immersive week-and-a-half language and culture séjour in Nouméa.

Teachers will experience authentic language andcultural learning opportunities through intensive lessons at the Université dela Nouvelle-Calédonie (UNC). Participants will spend two days in local schoolswhile being hosted by families, providing valuable insight into the localeducation system and daily life in New Caledonia. The group will also visitvarious sites in and around Nouméa to better appreciate the area’s history andcultures.
NOTE: A required componentof the programme is for participants to complete an immersion project. This mayinclude (resource creation, video presentations, materials to be used inclasses in NZ) and will be shared with the group on the final day in Nouméa.

This fully immersive programme has been designed specifically for New Zealand teachers. It aims to provide opportunities to use French in authentic contexts, engage with local communities, and deepen understanding of New Caledonian cultures and society. Participants will also reflect on their learning and develop ways to integrate their experience into their own teaching practice.
Programme activities (TBC):
- Language, history, culture and conversation classes at L’institut national supérieur du professorat et de l'éducation, UNC
- Educational visits to Tjibaou Cultural Centre, City Museum of Nouméa, Nouméa Aquarium and marine conservation talk, WWII Museum
- School visits for two days*
*Participants will stay with homestay families and accompany their host teacher to school for two days. They will then spend the weekend with their host family before rejoining the group for the final three days of the programme.
What’s included?
Language Circle will cover the cost of:
- French language and culture classes at l’INSPE, UNC
- All group activities
- 7 nights’ accommodation at university residences (individual rooms, half board – breakfast and one meal per day)
- 5 nights’ accommodation and meals with a homestay
- International flights (ex-Auckland) and any required domestic connections
- Travel insurance
- Transport within Nouméa for programme activities
What’s not included?
Participants will cover the cost of:
- Transport to and from airports in New Zealand (including petrol and parking)
- Visa fees (if required)
- One meal per day while at UNC accommodation
- Personal expenses
- Any other non-immersion programme costs while in Nouméa
- International roaming/eSims
Participants will miss the last day of Term 3 from classes. The cost of release time will need to be covered by the participant’s school. Language Circle will communicate this to principals during the approval process.
Applicants must be New Zealand registered teachers who are currently teaching French at a New Zealand school and are intending to continue to teach French in NZ in 2027 and beyond.
Pre-Service Teachers and holders of a LAT are not eligible.
Places on the trip are very limited, and priority will go to those who:
- Are teaching French at Years 7-10 in 2026
- Are not a native speaker of French
- Have a demonstrated commitment to language PLD
- Can articulate why their participation on the trip will benefit their students
Participants are expected to:
- Submit required documents such as passport details
- Complete three online surveys for Language Circle
- Attend a two-hour online orientation meeting in August (attendance is required)
