Introducing Japanese in Your Classroom

Thinking about introducing Japanese in your classroom, but not sure where to start? Build the knowledge and skills to get started using Waku Waku Nihongo.

This online workshop series is designed for primary and intermediate teachers who are interested in introducing Japanese in their classroom.

Using the Aotearoa New Zealand version of Waku Waku Nihongo, a set of structured materials developed for younger learners, participants will build the knowledge and skills needed to get started.

Across eight short sessions, the series provides practical guidance on how to use the materials and adapt them for different classroom contexts, helping teachers introduce simple Japanese learning with confidence.

When & Where

Term 2, Weeks 2–10 (no session in Week 7)
Eight 60-minute sessions

Two weekly time options (same content):

  • Wednesday 4.00–5.00 pm
  • Thursday 5.00–6.00 pm


Chisato will be in touch regarding which time you would like to attend.
Participants are encouraged to attend the same session each week. However, if needed, you are welcome to join the alternative session.

Online - Zoom link will be sent once registrations are accepted.

What we will cover

Course Materials
The workshop uses the Aotearoa New Zealand version of Waku Waku Nihongo, originally developed by The Japan Foundation, Cairo for use with younger learners.
This version has been translated and localised as part of an NZAJLT project to support Japanese language learning in New Zealand classrooms.
The materials are designed to be flexible, allowing teachers to use individual units independently while introducing both Japanese language and culture.

  • Workshop 7: Unit 6 – Traditional Japanese games
  • Workshop 8: From learning to your classroom

This workshop series provides opportunities for teachers to build confidence in introducing Japanese in their classroom.

Throughout the sessions, participants will:

  • build foundational knowledge and skills to introduce Japanese
  • become familiar with Waku Waku Nihongo and its classroom use
  • explore simple, classroom-friendly activities and ideas
  • develop confidence in using basic Japanese in the classroom
  • connect with other teachers and share ideas

Who should attend

Open to New Zealand registered teachers who are interested in introducing Japanese in their classroom.
No prior knowledge of Japanese is required.
The workshop will be delivered in English.

Cost

Language Circle is funded to provide professional learning for provisionally and fully registered Primary, Intermediate and Secondary teachers throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.
