Power of Languages 2.0 – A Whole-School Approach to Language Learning

An engaging programme that introduces Year 8 students to the value of learning languages while equipping teachers with practical strategies to integrate language learning and intercultural understanding into their classroom programmes.

All Year, On-Demand Workshop

Power of Languages 2.0 helps schools spark students’ interest in languages and cultures, while also giving teachers practical ideas they can use straight away in their classrooms.
Many intermediate students are naturally curious about languages and the wider world, but don’t always get the chance to explore this in class. At the same time, teachers often want to include languages in their teaching, but may feel unsure where to start if they are not language specialists.

Power of Languages 2.0 responds to this by offering two flexible options for schools to get involved:

Option A – Student Programme + Teacher Workshop

Schools can host a student workshop during the school day, followed by a professional learning session for teachers after school.
During the day, students take part in an interactive, station-based programme where they explore different languages and cultures through games, short challenges, and collaborative activities.
After school, teachers join a hands-on workshop focused on practical ways to bring language learning and intercultural understanding into their existing classroom programmes.
Schools choosing this option agree to have their Year 7–8 teachers attend the workshop, so the ideas from the day can continue to grow beyond the students’ activities during the workshop.

Option B – Teacher Workshop Only
Schools can also choose to sign up for the teacher workshop only, without running the student programme.
This option focuses on practical ideas and strategies that teachers can use to bring languages and intercultural learning into their everyday classroom teaching.

When & Where

This is an on-demand workshop, which will be tailored to schools' needs. The teachers’ workshop can be delivered as anything from a 60-minute workshop to a whole day PLD for any interested staff.
Students’ workshop will be between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on the number of students and school timetables.
Workshops take place at participating schools. Where possible, we will try and combine schools, especially for the teachers’ workshop.
Dates will be arranged individually with schools after registration and will begin in term 2.
Student activities take place during school days, while teacher workshops can be held during school or after school hours.

What we will cover

Student workshop

Students participate in hands-on language activities across the following languages: German, Japanese, French, Spanish and Chinese. Working in small groups, they explore new words and different cultures through interactive tasks and short challenges.

The programme helps students:
- build confidence when encountering unfamiliar languages
- recognise similarities and differences between languages
- connect languages with culture, identity and everyday life
- understand why languages are valuable for their own future

Teacher workshop

The teacher workshop focuses on practical ways to integrate languages and intercultural learning into Year 7–8 classrooms, even for teachers who do not speak the respective language.

Participants will:
- learn how to embed short and easy-to-teach “language moments” into their lessons
- explore strategies that help students feel confident engaging with new languages
- discover ways to develop intercultural understanding through simple classroom activities.

At the end of the workshop participants have practical tools and a clear framework for helping students see languages as meaningful and connected to their future pathways.
