This workshop demonstrates the importance of speed reading by introducing a newly developed Japanese speed-reading website designed for learners of Japanese in New Zealand

Reading plays an important role in developing overall language proficiency, and learner engagement in Japanese language classrooms. Participants will explore a speed-reading website designed for learners of Japanese through hands-on activities and collaborative discussion. The workshop will also provide practical classroom ideas and ready-to-use reading activities for intermediate to secondary learners.

What we will cover

Why reading matters in Japanese language learning
Reading plays an important role in developing overall language proficiency and increasing learner engagement in Japanese language classrooms. Through regular reading experiences, particularly with level-appropriate texts, learners can build reading fluency and confidence, increase their familiarity with language patterns, and engage with Japanese in enjoyable and accessible ways.

Throughout the session, participants will:

  • explore the role of reading in developing overall language proficiency
  • become familiar with the speed-reading website and its features
  • try reading materials and activities through hands-on practice
  • discuss and share practical classroom ideas for using reading activities

Who should attend

Teachers of Japanese
This workshop will be delivered mainly in English, with some Japanese used throughout the session.

Language Circle is funded to provide professional learning for provisionally and fully registered Primary, Intermediate and Secondary teachers throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.
